ASSAULT ON POLICE
BOTTLE AND STONE THROWN INCIDENT AT RUATORIA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] GISBORNE, Tuesday "I threw a bottle and a stone at the police to frighten them off the streets on picture nights" was the explanation of a Maori, Tukana Te Purei, aged 18, who was charged at Iluatoria with assaulting the police. It was stated that the accused galloped past on his horse, and, as he passed the police, ho threw a bottle with such force that it broke against a building.- Tho accused returned almost immediately, and threw a stone, which missed its target and made a big deut in an iron wall. The police added that occurrences of this sort were frequent in Iluatoria, and it was difficult to detect offenders who galloped past. The accused was sentenced to two months' gaol on each of the two charges of assault, the sentences to be cumulative.
