MEAT EXPORT QUOTA
EFFECT ON SHEEP PRICES NECESSITY FOR PROTECTION [by TKLEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] HASTINGS, Tuesday " The value of old ewes wilt- be greatly reduced as a result of the British quota," said Mr. Lloyd Hammond, Southern Hawke's Bay representative on the executive of the New Zealand Farmers' TJnion, speaking at a meeting of the provincial executives of the Hawke's Bay and Southern Hawke's Bay branches of the Farmers' TJnion at Waipukurau. "The quota will cause a glut on. the market and the man with these sheep will need protection," he added.
Mr. Hammond said he believed some measure of control would be necessary and that a levy was desirable in order to compensate owners of old .ewes. Control by the Meat Board rather than the State was preferred. The meeting discussed a proposal to send, a representative to Britain to meet British farmers and the Board of Trade to present New Zeaiand's^case. A resolution was passed approving the principle of sending home a representative.
