SAFETY CROSSING

LANE FOR PEDESTRIANS HOBSON STREET INNOVATION USE OF COLOURED CONCRETE A permanent pedestrian crossing in coloured concrete is being constructed by the City Council in Hobson Street. This is for the convenience of visitors to the premises of the Farmers' Trading Company, Limited, and the cost of the work is being borne by the company. The necessity for such a crossing has arisen as a result of the recent introduction of the trolley bus service from Queen Street to the company's warehouse. As these vehicles unload and load their passengers on the eastern side of Hobson Street it was deemed advisable to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians, particularly in view of the volume of traffic which uses Hobson Street. The crossing is to be 1-1 ft. wide and a start has been made with the excavation in the street paving for the laying of the necessary concrete foundation. Pre-east slabs in yellow concrete, measuring 18in, by 1 Sin., have been made, and when they have been laid the joints will be painted with a red composition. Along both edges there will be a border of red concrete strips 9in. wide. With this colour combination the crossing will stand out prominently against the white of the existing roadway. The scheme includes the installation of modern electric light signals so that the flow of pedestrian traffic across the street can be controlled. By this means it will be possible to a Void unnecessary delay to vehicular traffic using Hobson Street.
