CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED INCREASED MEMBERSHIP An increase to 738 in the membership of the • Auckland Chamber of Commerce was reported to members at the annual meeting yesterday. The membership compared with 645 for the previous year. Mr. A. Ely, who was re-elected president, presided over the meeting, which was preceded by a luncheon.
The annual report stated that all items of income had shown an improvement and on the expenditure side there had been a slight reduction. The net effect was a loss on the year's working of £IOS before making an internal charge of £l5O for office accommodation. Expenditure was shown at £2553 and income at £2295.
It was stated that during the year the chamber had widened its activities and had pressed for the adoption of many reforms and innovations. It had also ventilated a large number of topics ■with a view to educating public opinion or influencing the policy of the authorities.
When moving the adoption of the report, Mr. Ely expressed the chamber's thanks to various persons and organisations from which every help had been forthcoming over the past year, including the City Council, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, Government officers and various special committees. He also said he would not be satisfied with the membership until it reached 1000.
In addition to Mr. Ely, the follow-, ing officers were re-elected: —Vicepresident, Mr. N. B. Spencer; council members, Messrs. B. H. Kingston, L. D. Nathan, A. E. Playle and G. S. Poole, with the addition of Mr. R. S. Harrop; auditor, Mr. N. A. Duthie.
