ARM TORN OFF

HAND CAUGHT IN BELT MAN HURLED AROUND PULLEY VICTIM IN SERIOUS STATE Hurled around a pulley when his hand was caught in the belting, Mr. Ernest Piggott, aged 58, married, of luakau Road, Buckland, had his right arm torn off when adjusting machinery in a sawmill at Buckland on Saturday. Mr. Piggott, who* is a well-known farmer in the Franklin district, was the unsuccessful Labour candidate for the 1* ranklin seat at the last general election.

Mr. Piggott operates a sawmill at Parker's Lane, about half a mile from his home. He went to the mill at about eight o'clock on Saturday morning and about an hour and a-half later his wife and three sons heard him calling for aid. They found him approaching the house with only the stump of his right arm remaining.

Mr. Piggott explained that while attending to adjustments on a belt which operates a machine known as a sawdust creeper, his hand became caught in the belting. After being assisted to his home Ml-. Piggott was attended by Dr. A. T. Bogg, of Pukekohe, and was admitted to the Auckland Hospital late in the morning. His condition was stated last night to be serious.
