GOOD DIVIDENDS AT TE RAPA
FARLAND DEFEATS SPRINTERS Several good dividends were returned at Te Rapa on Saturday when Farland, first fancy for the President's Handicap on the straight-out machine, was the only favourite to win. The best return was made by Manawahe when she prevailed in the Frankton Hurdles, in which seven of the 15 runners fell at the first fence and another lost his rider at the second, Beeswing and Rollicker were other winners to pay double figures and Windcress returned the largest place dividend. Some excellent finishes were witnessed and there was a great tussle in the chief event, the Storey Memorial Handicap, in which Scotland scored from the consistent Lady Montana and Master Brierly. The first and third horses have both reached the veteran stage, Scotland being eight and Master Brierly nine years old. It was Scotland's second success in the race, as he was also victorious in 1937 when the distance was a mile and a-quarter and he carried 8.8 to win by a short head in 2.7 1-5. The victory of Farland in the open sprint was achieved in good style from Scotland s stablemate Llangollen, who registered a game effort under topweight 9.5.
