DEFENCE
Sir, —For some months past one has been toying with the idea of a battleships—for the New Zealand Navy—or something that would help keep a raiding party's guns or bombs well away from Queen Street. Now that Australia is planning a major dock, why not say a "pocket battleship" bought for the defence of New Zealand and the Empire, by public subscription? Let as make this a "patriotic year." The Government, one feels sure, would welcome any voluntary assistance iii keeping New Zealand secure for New Zealanders, and her peaceful immigrants, and to help the Empire in a policy of peace and goodwill; Should there be a grain of practicability in the idea, maybe the heads of our local body governments, or some responsible society, would follow it on to practical application. If we worked fcard and gave freely this year for an urgent and patriotic need, we could than feel more at liberty to enjoy the play and celebrations planned for us in the 1910 Centennial year. Strong for Defence.
