I.i ...... t SUCCESSES FOR VETERANS OTAGO'S YALDHURST SHIELD SQUADRON RACE TO AUCKLAND £by telegraph—press . association] INVERCABGiLSrSaoday Fighting for championship laurels the leading swimmers of the Dominion provided many thrills at the liivercargill Municipal Baths last night for the concluding events of the New Zealand swimming championships. No records were broken, but this was to be ex- - pected, considering the acknowledged slowness of the water in Invercargill. However, there were many fast times daring the evening and the standard of performances was excellent. In, her second senior championship race Miss Joyce Mac Donald brought Southland its second title by winning the 200 metres ladies' : backstroke championship. Firmly establishing his claims to. the- honour of being the leading middle-distance and distance swimmer, A. T. E. Stokes,, the Canterbury veteran, who has made such a- wonderful come-back this year, won the quarter-mile men's free-style championship in convincing style from L. Newell, Canterbury, and the recordholder. Stokes gave an excellent performance, winning by seven yards. Another ' veteran swimmer showed superiority over his younger rivals in the 100 yards men's breaststroke, when L. Smith, Wanganui, won by a touch from W. Dyson, Otago. Eight times breaststroke champion of New Zealand, Smith gave one of his best performances in beating a very strong field. Provinces' Pinal Points

The Annette Kellerman Cup open water race swim at the Bluff to-day was won by A. V. Osmond, Hawke's Bay. The water , was very cold and only three of the starters finished. The Yaldhurst Shield for ' the province gaining the most points in championship events was won by Otago, which secured 45, nine points more than Canterbury. Southland and Auckland, which won the shield last year, were third. ,The final points were:— Otago, 45; Canterbury, 36; Southland, 33; Auckland, • 33; Wellington, 9; Wanganui, 6; Taranaki, o; Bay of Plenty, 5; Nelson, 3. Great Endurance Showing great endurance and firmly establishing his reputation as a distance swimmer, A. V. Osmond, Hawke's Bay, to-day won the Annette Kellerman Cup, a three-miles open water race in the Bluff Harbour. The water was bitterly cold and only three of the 10 starters finished the course. " Osmond, whose handicap was 4m 30s, also secured fastest time, completing the course in lh 56m 255. Second place went to W. B._ Milne, of Taranaki, who had a. handicap of lm. He finished 700 yards behind Osmond. Four hundred yards further back came C. M. Robertson (West Coast), in third place. F. Clow (Taranaki), last year's winner, retired after swimming a mile. J. Frank (Nelson) pulled out after swimming about half the course. He had no boat to guide him and had difficulty in keeping to the course. , _ • , The result was:—A. V.
