MINE TO BE CLOSED EXHAUSTION OF ORE BROKEN HILL PROPRIETARY SYDNEY, Feb. 18 The manager of the Broken Hill Proprietary mine, Mr. W. N. Cranz, announced to-day that the mine would cease operations on March 4. The decision to close it was the result of the workable ore being exhausted. Since work began at, the mine in 1884 about 12,300,000 tons of ore had been mined, and the aggregate value of the mineral extracted was about £160,000,000. Shareholders have received about £15,000,000 in dividends and bonus shares in the 54 years since the famous Broken Hill mine was opened in New South Wales. Originally it was expected the mine would be closed at the end of 1938, but apparently sufficient' work' was found to carry on. It was understood the staff, which numbered about 500; .was being transferred to other centres.
