UNUSUAL EXCUSE
INTOXICATED MOTORIST WEIGHT-LIFTING FEAT FEELING EFFECTS OF STRAIN [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTOIST NORTH, Thursday An unusual excuse in answer to a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a car was tendered by counsel during the hearing of a case at Pahiatua. The defendant was William TJdy, for whom Mr. S. K. Siddells appeared. Counsel said that while TJdy would admit having had six beers during the afternoon, his condition of weakness had been brought about by an attempt to perform the feat of lifting one-handed a 12-stone man from a chair on to a bar counter. The strain of such extreme exertion caused TJdy to bo ill and in order to recover he went and sat in his car, where he had been for about half an hour before being arrested. Udy had already arranged for his son to drive him home. He had not driven, nor had he intended to drive.
Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., agreed that the offence was not as badi as some, but the Bench had a duty to perform to the public. In view of the unusual circumstances, the least penalty he could inflict was to fine IJdy £lO and cancel his licence for 12 months.
