MASS FOR THE POPE
AUCKLAND CELEBRATION ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL ADDRESS BY BISHOP LISTON The first official public act of the Catholic Church in Auckland concerning the obsequies of the late Pope Pius XI. will be the Pontifical Requiem Mass, which will bo sung by Bishop Liston at St. Patrick's Cathedral at 10 o'clock this morning. The Government, Consular Corps and public bodies will be represented at the Mass. Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P., Parliamentary Under-Secretary in charge of Housing, will represent the Government, and the Hon. W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will attend. The Maj'or of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, will be present. The music will be sung by a choir of priests and the address will be delivered by Bishop Liston.
Attended only by senior pupils of Catholic schools in the city and suburbs, Pontifical Requiem Mass will bo sung by Bishop Liston at St. Patrick's Cathedral at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. The music will again be sung by a choir of priests. Grateful acknowledgement of condolences sent on behalf of the clergy and laity of the diocese was received yesterday by Bishop Liston from the Cardinal Camerlingo, His Eminence Cardinal Pacelli. The cablegram expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the Sacred College of Cardinals for the message of sorrow and sympathy received from Bishop Liston.
PRESBYTERY'S SYMPATHY LETTER OF CONDOLENCE At a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last night it was decided to send a letter of condolence to Bishop Liston on the death of the Pope. The gathering stood in silence as a mark of respect.
