Miss Eureka (E. Clifford), covered threo furlongs in 37 2-ss, while others given useful tasks separately were Tellson, Glen Council and Esquire, who came home fast.

Bonstar (Quedley) impressed by defeating Royevrus (E. Clifford) over five furlongs in 1.3, the first three in 37 l-5s and the half-mile in 49 3-ss. It was a good' effort for ono eligible for hack class. Smart Five Furlongs Brazilian (Hatwell) and Pleuron (Beguely) ran five furlongs from disc to disc in 1.3, both moving with freedom. Bachelor King (Bartle) had Dauber (Beguely) as companion over five furlongs run in 1.3 3-ss. Both are fit. Rey Lu (G. BETTING SYSTEM CHANGE AT ELLERSLIE RETURN TO WIN AND PLACE DECISION WELL RECEIVED BY ARCHER • ' . ' Tho decision of the committee of the Auckland Racing Club to revert to tho win and placo system of betting when tho necessary alterations have been mado to the totalizator has been well received. Tho success of racing depends upon the patronago of horse owners and tho public'and it is my impression that the win and placo system best serves the interests of both.

' Tho system provides tho owner with means of backing his horse for an outright win, a privilege which they enjoy on most of the important courses in the world, and it seems scarcely fair that they should be deprived of it at Ellerslie because a section of racegoers prefer the one-two betting. 'ln addition tho placo machine gives the owner an opportunity, if ho so desires, of covering his win investment with a wager for a place. Moreover, tlio system given tho public the chance of having a wager for a win, with the possibility of much better , dividends than under tho one-two method, as well as three chances for a place in lields of over eight. It is my impression that there has been a definito swing in favour of the win and placo now that tho public has become moro educated to tho system. Tho idea is strengthened by the substantial turnovers of the clubs which havo been using win and place and the great success it has been at courses like Trentham, To Rapa, Riccarton and To Aroha, and tho same should be the case at Ellerslie. The affairs of tho Auckland Racing Club aro being very capably managed by tho committee, which is to bo congratulated on the success it lias achieved in tho past, and the decision to make the change would certainly not have been made unless the matter had been given mature consideration. It is my belief that the committee has made a wise decision and the system is one which should' provo popular with the majority of tho regular patrons of Ellerslie.
