YACHT RACING

THE KAWAU REGATTA SUCCESS OF NEW BOATS RANGER'S GOOD PERFORMANCE BY SPINDRIFT The new keel yachts Matia and Ranger each registered a win in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's regatta at Ivawau Island on Saturday. .Matia started with 22 other keel yachts in the race sailed by lady skippers, and performed exceptionally well, both on and off the wind. She took the lead early in the race and, although passed by Ariki at one stage, she later regained her position, crossing the finishing line 24s ahead of Ariki, which beat Ngatoa by 545. Matia was also first to finish in the night cruising race for A class yachts.

Ranger did not start in the ladies' race, but made an appearance in the contest for the Goldie Trophy. There were 13 competitors and, although Ranger was not very prominent in the early part of the first round, alie made a good recovery in the second, Rounding the mark off Christian Point Ranger occupied eighth position. The boats could almost fetch their next mark, and Ranger gradually caught the leaders. Off Mayne Island Ranger ran into fourth place, and between the island and the mark boat she had narrowed the issue down to. herself and Ariki, with Matia holding third place. At the completion of the first round Ariki had a lead of 3m 8s from Ranger and at the time Ariki appeared to have the upper hand. The same order was maintained as the boats rounded the Christian Point mark for the second time, and when they were well down to Algie's Point Ranger made an impression on Ariki and finally passed her off Mavne Island. The wind at this stage drew more from the south, and Ranger's big reaching Jib helped her considerably. She finally _ crossed the line 3m Is ahead of Ariki, which finished 7m 2s in front of Matia, with Ngatoa lm 2s further astern.
