RECENT TOURNAMENTS LARGE INCREASE IN ENTRIES VETERANS* EVENT ON MARCH 8 A report covering the recent Auckland handicap tourney was tabled at last evening's meeting of delegates to the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. Attention was drawn to the fact that the entries showed an increase oi nearly 50. It was estimated that the tournament would show a profit of approximately £ls, as against a loss of £3O for the previous year. A vote of thanks was accortted Mr. J, Fernandez, the manager, and the committee.
The report on the Auckland championship tournament showed an equal increase In entries, these being particularly noticeable in the intermediate and junior events. It was anticipated that tho tournament would return a profit of £l4O, compared with £l7O last year. , . Mr. A. C. Johns reforred to the restriction applied to the men's singles whereby the entries were limited to 32, and suggested that this number should be increased to 04. He pointed out that a number of players who were excluded wero fully up to senior standard, and some of them had been disappointed at being relegated to the B section. He moved that the number should be increased to (M and the motion was carried. The president, Mr. S, Lamb, congratulated Mr. J. K. S. Hall, manager, and Mr. Ohlson, assistant manager, and their committee on the excellent conduct of the tournament. The president, reported that A. S. Burns and B. Broun had been selected as members of the New Zealand junior team to visit Australia shortly. A report from the New Zealand Association stated that A. D. Brown had been added to the Davis Cup team. Advice was also rocelved that definite dates had been fixed for the HMO New Zealand championships at Wellington, these being February 10 to February 17. Invitations had been sent to leading overseas pin vers and some favourable replies had already been received. A complaint was received from the Mount Eden Club regarding the inadequate marking of courts at Windmill Road. It was reported that the Citv Council had been approached In the matter and had also been requested to receive n deputation from the association regarding tho resurfacing of tho Domain courts. , , It was announced that the annual veterans tournament would be held on March 8, This is a handicap doubles tournament limited to players of l"i and over, with the further provision that no pair may enter unless their combined ages total 100 years. ]t was agreed to hold the Country Weekend tournament on March 1 and 5. The following committee was set up to control the Auckland hard-court tournament to be held at Easter: —Messrs. J. Fernandez. S. Cleal. Enwriglit. .T. Harrison, A. Ohlson, Rowler, A. E. McKeown, Wade. Cava ye, H. X. Potter. Armitage. L. .T. Williamson. Owing to the transfer of Mr. D. Wright from Auckland a vacancy- occurred on the emergency committee. This was filled by the election of Mr. G. Orrell. A notice of motion Riven by the Remnera Club came forward for decision. This had reference to the rule of the association which nermits members of the Stanley Street courts to become members of the association. It was proposed that this rule should he rescinded and that the by-laws governing play at Stanley Street be amended to restrict the right of play to members of affiliated clubs. Tho motion was carried without dissent.
