WAIKINO SCRUB FIRE

HOMES THREATENED MARTHA BATTERY IN DANGER POWER POLES CATCH ALIGHT [by telegraph —own correspondent! WAIHI. Monday Homes occupied by Mr. G. H. Broadfoot and Mr. N. L. Lithgow and the battery plant of the Martha Gold Mining Company (Waihi), Limited, were threatened by extensive scrub fire at Waikino at the week-end. Originating a-quarter of a mile west of the battery, the fire rapidly spread through the dry gorse and manuka on the banks of the Ohinemuri River and advanced toward the company's plant. All the available shiftmen left the plant and helped to fight the flames. The battery superintendent, Mr. J. H. G. Banks, and the chief engineer, Mr. J. W. Jones, directed the men.

At one stage the poles carrying electricity to Waihi were on fire, but an officer of the Thames Valley ElectricPower Board climbed each standard and extinguished the flames. Each time liis clothing caught alight the flames were beaten out, but his clothes were ruined when he had finished his job. As the fire neared the power house leads of hose were brought out and the flames were subdued.
