YOUTH IN INDUSTRY

SHORTAGE AT DUNEDIN NO BOYS FOR OFFICE WORK CLOTHING TRADES' POSITION [BY TELKGRArn —PRKSS ASSOCIATION*] DUNEDIN, Saturday There is a K shortage boys and girls for industrial occupations in Dunedin. Girls, in particular, are required for the clothing trades, and there are other vacancies offering in workrooms. So far as boys are concerned there is a surplus of candidates only for the engineering and building trades. For general work in offices there is a shortage of suitably-educated boys, especially of those who have passed their matriculation examination. Difficulty is also being experienced in obtaining boys for . other occupations requiring this examination, instances being surveying and pharmacy. It is noticeable that boys possessing these qualifications show a disinclination to enter the technical side of manufacturing, much preferring to go straight into office work.

The shortage of boys possessing matriculation Qualifications may be partly because their services were bespoke during the year as soon as their studies ended. They were at once absorbed into employment, and there is therefore little free labour in this class. Nearly all of last year's shorthand and typewriting trainees have been placed in positions since Christmas.
