SATISFACTORY POSITION
YEAR OF STEADY PROGRESS Satisfaction with the year's work of the Mount Albert Borough Council was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. H. A. Anderson, in wishing members of the council the compliments of the season at the conclusion of the council's final meeting of the year last night. The council had made steady progress during the year, added Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson extended greetings to Mr. A. S. Richards, M.P. for Roskill and one of the Mount Albert area's representatives in Parliament, and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr. W. T. Anderton, M.P. for Eden. Mr. Richards, who attends every final council meeting of the year, extended his good wishes to the Mayor and Mayoress and members of the council. "Wo are at present passing through one of the greatest crises New Zealand has ever experienced," Mr. Richards said, "but the Dominion is destined to go forward to greater and better things and Mount Albert will certainlv share in those better things. The council had a credit balance in tho bank of £13,713. stated a report presented by the town clerk . compared with a credit balance of £<9B9 at the end of 1937. That satisfactory position was largelv due to n considerable improvement in tho collection of arrears In connection with the large credit at the present time, tho town clerk pointed out that at the beginning of January half-vcarly interest totalling £l.',4<i3 had 'to be paid, and he anticipated covering that debt without rccourso to overdraft or deposit money. _ , no _ ~ A statement showed that in 19«J< the total collection of gonial rates was £45,521. compared with £;>0,033 this year. Water rates totalling £7640 were collected last 3'car, against £S3~* this year.
