OHAKUNE VEGETABLES

REMARKABLE INCREASE MARKETING PROBLEM REQUEST FOR NIGHT TRAINS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] OHAKUNE, Wednesday The remarkable increase in vegetable growing for the Auckland market which has occurred in the Ohakune district during recent years was pointed out by a deputation of growers which waited on Railway Department officials who passed through Ohakune by the railcar Tokomaru for Wellington yesterday. .... In requesting the provision of fast night goods expresses to Auckland the deputation asked that these should be comprised of ventilated waggons and suggested that trains of nine waggons should be run three times weekly from January to August. Green vegetables and potatoes produced in Ohakune for outside markets had increased in quantity by 700 per cent in the past three years. , The deputation stated that it was reasonable to expect that 10,000 tons would be exported this year, mainly to the Auckland market. As yet only about one-eighth of the district had been developed. Approximately 500 acres were coming into production each year. Three additional large Government blocks were already cleared and were being subdivided. The deputation was assured that its request would receive consideration.
