IRRIGATION CANAL
MODERN MACHINERY USED 30 TONS SHIFTED A MINUTE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Hillsides no longer form a barrier to man's progress. If they are in the way he merely removes them. That is how it appeared at Surrey Hills when the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. 11. Semplo, made an inspection of the progress of the work 011 the irrigation canal now being constructed between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers. Three angle dozers wera at work, an;l between them they wore shifting 30 cons of earth from tho hillside every minuto. The machines wero making the first cut in tho earthwork of the canal on this section of its. route across Mid-Canter-bury. The work on the scheme is being speeded up. It is hoped to have it completed early in 1941. An effort will also be made to co-ordinate the completion of the hydro-electric power station at tho llokaia River with the opening of the irrigation scheme.
