PETITE JEWEL PLEASES FINE EFFORT BY BEDFORD EIGHTEEN CARAT IN FORM BY ABAYDOS Heavy showers mado the footing dead for early workers oij the Epsom dirt track yesterday, but it improved after breakfast. Good, efforts were registered by Eighteen Carat, Star Pronto, Petite Jewel, Bedford, Pukemiro and Kewpio's Queen. On the cinders, which gave good going, Fornbrook Lass, Noble Prince and Stargum performed well. All'work was done tho reverse way. Great Sonoma (C. M. Morrison), Grand Dame (IC. Boll), Ivewpie's Queen (\V. Gee), Ivewpie's Crest (J. Gee), Petite Jewel (W. H. Andrews) and lied ford (F. Herring) went away as named, with three seconds between tho first and last horses. By early lapses, Great Sonoma and Grand Dame lost their positions, and Kewpio's Queen took chargo at tho half-mile, where Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoney), joined in. Kewpio's Queen passed tho mile in 2.23, but in tho run homo, Petite Jewel and Bedford headed her to finish almost on terms, with Ivewpie's Queen third, and Great Sonoma closo up, next. PotitO Jewel ran 3.30 and put dash into tho last three furlongs, run in 50s. Ho is in splendid racing order. Bedford, who did not get a run until after a mile, finished on very splidly in 3.29 2-6, the last half in 1.8. He has'improved with racing. Kewpie's Queen gave her usual smooth display, going 3.32. After two lapses, Great Sonoma trotted fast on tho final lap to run 1.8, Kewpie's Bingen (A. J'. Julian), who was tho first to work, ran a mile and a-quarter in 3.1 3-5, the last half in 1.10. Ivewpie's Bingen, who wont soro after racing in August, did his work resolutely. He looks a little, robust, • Star Pronto Just Fails ' Star Pronto (B. Dyor) mado an unsuccessful attempt to concede Eighteen Carat (C. M. Morrison) two seconds start in a milo and a-quarter. Tho first six furlongs took 1.49, and thero was not much between them at the mile in 2.23. Hard driven, Eighteen Carat just won in 2.55. Ho sprinted with dash, but had had enough at the end. Star Pronto also did liis work well. Canadian (C. M. Morrison) trotted two miles, the last one evenly in 2.28. He is improving with useful tasks and may soon regain foi'm. Groat Surprise (L. Lavcr) went to the milo in 2.29 and maintaining an oven gait, completed a milo and a-half in 3.43. ; . Golden Surprise (R. A U S wl sh several breaks, took 2.50.f0r the first of two miles. Joined on the last lap by tho unhoppled Groat Chum (S. M August),. Golden Sunrise trotted 1 the noxt mile in 2.33 without mistake. He has assumed racing shape and will improve. Great Chum, joined by Argolis (T. Carlyon), who was in saddle and tinhoppled, went on for two miles, the last half in 1.11 being his fastest. Great Chum is in good heart for his Claudelands engagements. Fisher (A. Paton), unhoppled, gave Dick Pedmond (A. T. Newdick) two seconds start and beat him over a mile and a-half in 8.40, after pulling hard in tho early part. WORK ON CINDERS : ; NOBLE PRINCE GOES FAST Fernbrook Lass (L. Laver) went away ono second ahead of Bismuth (A. McGarry), who was. followed, by Noble Prince (J. Mclvendrick) two seconds later. Fernbrook,Lass hung onto beat Noble Princo in 3.3o.'She ran tho first milo in 2.23, and was full of running nt tho finish. Noblo Princo went 3.27 2-5, running tho .last half in 1.6, and tho quarter in 325. It was a big improvement on his efforts ..of Saturday. Bismuth, who did not go in his usual style, was pulled up before reaching the milo and a-quarter. Given a second short run,' ho did little bettor, ami was not at homo on tho cinders. • Sequoia (W. H. Sammons) gave a fine free-legged display over a milo and a-quarter in . 3.0 2-5, tho last half in 1.9 2-5. Ho is showing improved stamina.

Pukemiro (W. Fleming) ran tho last ten furlongs of a milo and three-quar-ters in 2.59; sprinting tho last three furlongs in 50s. Pukemiro has mado good progress of lato. Lucky Love (W. Willetts), unhoppled, worked two miles easily in 5.8.

Led by Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoncy) for seven furlongs, Handieapper (G. H. Stubbs) worked a milo and a-quarter in 3.0, sprinting the last two furlongs in 34 2-ss. It was his first hoppled task since tho Thames meeting and ho went well. Silver Watch also acted as pacemaker for Stargiun. (W. Head) in tho early part of a milo and a-quarter, run in 2.57. Stargum, hoppled, put dash into tho last three furlongs, run in 51s. With Vanora (J. Mdhoitey), Shining Link (L. J. Malioney) worked a mile .and a-half in. 3.5. The Jewel Pointer filly has furnished nicely and is on tho up-grade.

GAY MOKO TROTS WELL TRIALS ON SAND TRACK On tho sand truck, Gay Moko (L. J. Mahoney) led . Autumn Lu (G. .H. Stubbs) throughout a solid mile and a-half. Autumn Lu was almost on terms at the mile, but Gay Moko, trotting faultlessly, wont away again. Gay Moko, who trots exceptionally well on tho sand, has disappointed in her lew races. Pink Lady (B. Dyer) trotted soundly over two miles, maintaining- an even gait. She has. done well since winning at tho Auckland mooting and, in spito of her difficult mark, should again raco well. . ... ;■ -- ■. Lady Triumph!) (D. Smith), unhoppled, and in saddle, -showed a good turn of speed when sprinted the last few' furlongs of a nine-furlong task. The aged mnro has made good progress BUtco being recommissioiicd. Gold Kip (O. M. Morrison) made no mistakes whilo going a mile and a-half, and ho rolishod tho easy track. Ho will raco lit tho second Waikato meeting. Post Haste (L. J. Mahoney), tmhopplod, rind Pirate's Last (J. Mahoney) sot out for a mile and ahalf, but, half-way tho former broke and Pirate's Last scored easily. Whitstono, (Xj. Laver) worked a mile and .a-half put, fjome dash into a final sprint? Ho is thriving on nnhoppled tasks, and hill work. Parishioner, who looks very bright, was given a similar task. •• ' . Equipoise (S. M.
