FAMOUS MATCH RACE

AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

SEABISCUIT AND WAR ADMIRAL

[from OCR OWN correspondent!

SAN FRAN,CISCO. Nov. 8

War Admiral was much better fancied than his older rival, Seabiscuit, in their long-awaited match race at Pimlico, Baltimore, Maryland, last week, but the Californian champion gave War Admiral every advantage and ( then beat him at his own game by going to the front and winning by four lengths. In so doing, Seabiscuit established a track record, previously held by Pompoon, of 1.56 3-5 for the nine and a-hali furlongs course. Ho ran the first quarter in 23 3-ss, lialf-milo in 47 3-ss, and mile in 1.36 4-5.

The track was fast and there was a record crowd of 40,000 persons, keyed up to the highest tension. . i Mr. S. Riddle, owner of War Admiral, had requested a walking start and that they should carry 8.8 instead of 9.0, as the Admiral was smaller. To both of these proposals Mr. C. Howard, Seabiscuit's owner, agreed. After two false starts, they were, off, but it was Seabiscuit, contrary' to expectations, who got the jump-out and he had a lead-of a length passing the first furlong. Before he passed the next post, Seabiscuit had increased his advantage to two lengths' and lie was moving along as smoothly as a Southern breeze. Then, to the first, roar of the crowd, War Admiral came up under full steam to cut away a "length, and another length at tho half-mile, so that there they were hoad and head. For almost half a mile they ran, Seabiscuit always with his nose in front, moving with his shorter, faster stride. War Admiral had thrown out his challenge and it had been answered. As they passed tho mile post, with a furlong and a-half to go—tho stretch that tolls tho story—Seabiscuit was still hanging on. Foot by foot, he moved away again. Kwitzinger gave War Admiral the whip but those on tho stands knew suddenly that ho' had' exhausted his run. Through tho final furlong it was not a contest. < * ■

"The pace, they say," declared one commentator, "is not to tho swift. But it is always to the swift and the game and Seabiscuit has these two important qualities."

Efforts to sccuro a return match proved unsuccessful. Said Mr. Howard: "Another race under the same conditions would be entirely satisfactory to us." However, tho reply of G. Conway, trainer of tho defeated horse, said there was no chance of a second trial.
