LOAN POLL
NEWMARKET SCHEIE SUM OF £18,500 INVOLVED OLYMPIC SWIMMING POOL VOTING. ON WEDNESDAY Under the scheme to provide an Olympic swimming pool and for other purposes, a poll of ratepayers of the Newmarket borough will bo held on Wednesday on the question of raising a loan not exceeding £18,500, with a currency of 25 years. If the proposal is carried there will bo a transformation in tlui appearance of much of the reserve at the end of Broadway bounded by Victoria Crescent and Parncll Road. The reserve is the proposed site for the swimming pool. It is intended to remove the present council yard from a portion of the area, and to establish it on land in Laxon Terraco, to bo acquired under the loan. It is considered that such transfer is necessary apart from the need* under tho swimming, bath proposal. Details ol Bath Plan Tho formation of tho reserve entails less excavation for a 50-metre pool than would bp necessary if the land were level with tho roadways. The bath buildings aro intended to be of concrete and contained in a single storey structure facing Parnoll Road. Tho pool will bo in tho open air, and a plant will keep tho temperature of tho water tepid for a good portion of the year. Plans also provido for a filtration plant that will turn over tho water every four hours. The pool will bo tiled and underwater lighting will bo provided. Particular attention will also bo given under tho plans to the ventilation of dressing rooms. Seating accommodation is to bo provided for 1500 persons, with facilities for temporary accommodation, if desired, to seat 2500 more. No other swimming bath in the Dominion would bo moro suited fort ho holding of big swimming meetings. Oar Parking Areas Parallel with tho bath will be two public tennis courts under tho scheme, and there is also provision for a children's playground. There is now a small cottage on tho reserve and it will bo necessary to remove this building. Another purpose of tho loan is to provido public car-parking areas close to Broadway. There has been such a stoady development of Broadway as a business and shopping area that there are times when great difficulty is experienced in obtaining car-parking spaco either on the roadway or near by. It is felt by members of the Borough Council that thero is a danger of community and commercial values being distributed to other shopping and business areas if motorists aro unable to gain easy access to Broadway because of inadequate parking facilities. Parking is expected to be free on tho areas to bo acquired under the loan, but this point has not yet been determined. So far tho proposed location has not boeu announced. Polling on Wednesday will extend from 9 a.m. to 7 the polling places being at the Municipal Hall iu Broadway and in Park Road.
