AJAX AND ROYAL CHIEF RIVALS TO MEET AGAIN L.K.S. MACKINNON STAKES (Received October 28, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 28 The meeting between Ajax and Royal Chief in the L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes, li miles, overshadows the other events at Flemington to-morrow. Both horses are very fit, and opinion is divided as to the probable result.
Nuffield has been working the righthanded way to protect his doubtful leg as much as possible. Whether or not he will bo a starter in the Melbourne Cup will be decided following his Derby effort.
F. Shean will ride Catalogue, and H. Mornement Queen of Song in the Hotham Handicap. Mornement will also be on Nethcrlea in the Derby, and K. Bar tie on Royal Chief in the L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes.
Elanago has been fired in the front tendons and will be given a long spell. The forecast is for sultry and unsettled weather, with a possibility of rain. The track at Flemington is in excellent condition. Messervy came on to Riccarton after the Wellington meeting and will remain until after the New Zealand Cup carnival. He was engaged yesterday to ride Tidewaiter in the New Zealand Cup. Messervy rode the gelding to victory in the Avondale Cup, but did not pilot him at Trentham. Other New Zealand Cup riders include:—C. Wilson, Valantna; A. E. Ellis, Willie Win; B. H. . STRATFORD EVENTS STAKES WORTH £3500 Stakes to the value of £3500 will be distributed at the Stratford Racing Club's Summer Meeting on . January 2 and 3. The chief event will be the Stratford Cup of £SOO and a gold cup valued at £SO. A good stake is provided for a nine-furlong hack event each day, the Te Kapua Hack Cup being worth £225 and a trophy valued at £25.
