SWIMMER DISAPPEARS
WAGER NOT TO BLAME Recording a verdict of "Accidental drowning," on John Archibald McGarity, aged 29. who met his death while making an attempt to swim across the River Huniber, the Hull coroner remarked: "I am satisfied that this num did not lose his life as the result of a wager." It was stated that McGaritv was swimming with another man, Charles William Wright. The boat which was accompanying tliem broke down. Wright returned to the boat, but McGarity, who was wearing a helmet and ear plugs, failed to hear the boatman's shouts. He swam on and was not seen alive again. Wright stated that there was neither wager nor argument between him and McGarity about their swimming ability. They had undergone training for the swim, and McGarity was confident he could do it.
