TEST FOR GOVERNMENT
PERIOD OF LOW PRICES / MANDATE FROM PEOPLE "A period of low prices will be the real test for the Government," said Sir George Shirtchffe, of Wellington, who returned by the Orcades yesterday after a trip abroad. Sir Georgo and Lady Shirtcliffe, who visited Malaya and Ceylon, will be passengers by the Orcades as far as Wellington. "If tho Government can survive* a time with prices lou\ I think it will be in tho saddle for some years," he continued. "That is the real test." The Labour Party had a clear mandate from the people, Sir George added. He said he was not surprised at the result of the election, although he had not expected Labour to bo returned with so large a majority. "One has to accept the position, and perhaps they will use their power with discretion," he added.
