HIGHWAY TO RUSSELL
[IMPROVED ROAD SURFACE SLIPS BLOCK WATER CHANNELS An improvement in the condition of the road surface on the highway between Whangarei and Russell, adding / to travelling comfort, is referred to in a report received by the Automobile Association (Auckland). Attention to the water tables along the middle section of the route, about which complaints have been prevalent in recent years, is said to be urgently needed, in view, of the importance of the road in. the summer. Water tables were recently blocked by 64 small slips between Whakapara and Russell, addition to which Bpoil blocked several other stretches of about two chains 'in length each. Such obstructions have been responsible for preventing storm water from escaping through proper channels, and ' being diverted across the road with detrimental effects. At present the northern section of the road is stated to be in better order than the southern portion, but it -has been explained to tne association that fine weather and the consolidation of the day banks at the roadside will remove the danger of further from slips.
