COAL STRIKE

EXPLOSIONS ON BRIDGE ATTEMPT AT DESTRUCTION PREVENTION OF IMPORTS APPEAL TO MARITIME WORKERS By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Received September 30, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 30 An unsuccessful attempt was made to blow up a bridge on the private railway line leading to the Rhondda Colliery in the Newcastle district. Five charges placed in the wooden supports exploded just after a coal train had crossed the bridge, but the structure remained intact. A conference of mining unions decided to endeavour to induce maritime workers not to handle the 100,000 tons of Coal which it is proposed to ship to Australia from the United Kingdom by 12 vessels for the use of public utilities.
