DEEP RELIEF
PASSING OF CRISIS AUCKLAND'S TRIBUTE MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S WORK FIXTURE FOR MONDAY " As with other New Zealanders, the people of Auckland received the news of the signing of the Munich agreement with feelings of profound relief," said the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, last night. " I am sure every citizen is deeply conscious of, and will remain eternally grateful for, this momentous service to statesmanship by the British Prime Minister, Mr. Chamberlain, whose masterly handling of a desperately delicate situation has won the admiration of the entire world. "In the belief that such a course correctly interprets public sentiment." continued Sir Ernest, " I intend to give the people of Auckland an opportunity on Monday of assembling and associating themselves with an expression of thanks and appreciation, for transmission to Mr. Chamberlain, on his historic and successful efforts in the interests of permanent European appeasement and lasting world peace. "The ceremony, which will take place at 12.15 p.m. on the apex in front of the Town Hall, will be purely civic in character and it will be of short duration. I extend to all citizens a cordial invitation to be present. To employers whose normal staff lunch hours do not coincide with the time fixed, I would appeal for the release of staffs at the earlier hour, so that all who wish may participate in the gathering. "Moreover, in order c that the results of the Munich deliberations shall be grasped by the rising generation, I would suggest to headmasters throughout the metropolitan area that thev take advantage of the opportunity at noon on Monday to assemble their children in school grounds and explain to them the significance of the negotiations which have prevented tho world from being plunged headlong into war."
