RUGBY FOOTBALL

■THE AUCKLAND UNION REPRESENTATIVES' SERVICES PRESENTATION OF BLAZERS TEAM ON SOUTHERN TOUR A proposal that the rules be altered to provide that Auckland representative players shall not in future receive caps was made by the chairman, Mr. Arthur Baker, in a notice of motion submitted to the meeting of the management committee last night. Mr. Baker said it had been ascertained that the "Wellington, Canterbury and Otago unions no longer gave caps to their representative players. In the old days a football cap 'was treasured and used, but now a cap was never used. Even the New Zealand Rugby Union had ceased to give caps to international players. Othor unions now gave blazers, which were useful articles. It was time Auckland came into line. "It is many years," added Mr. Baker, "since I have seen a representative cap worn. The last time was on the occasion of our jubilee, when we specially asked the Wellington and Auckland representatives to wear their caps when they arrived at the ground in coaches." Question of Recognition Mr. A. Billington pointed out that the qualification for receiving a blazer was to represent Auckland over a period of two years. Unless that rule was altered the effect of not giving caps would be that a player who represented the union in only one year would receive no recognition, except to have his name placed on the roll of honour. It was''finally .resolved that the matter be deferred for a week, and that in the meantime a sub-committee,, consisting of the chairman and Messrs. S. Cleal and A. Billington, obtain further information from southern unions and draft a new rule to cover the liubject in the form of a remit to be approved. for submission to the annual meeting of delegates to the union.

A report on file recent "tour of the Auckland representative team was made by the manager, Mr. G. Orrell, who said members of the team had conveyed their appreciation of the trip that had been arranged for them. In reply to an inquiry by Mr.. Cleal as to whether the team found' the bus travelling tiring, Mr. Orrell said that on the trip from Auckland to Palmerston some of the team were uncomfortable, but- otherwise, except for the long return trip from Napier, the bus was considered very comfortable and satisfactory, and was very convenient in always being available to take the team to training at the various towns. Passing from Scrum The letter written by the New Zealand captain. N. A. Mitchell, to the New Zealand Union, on the subject of the advantage of a long pass from the base of the scrum, was forwarded in a circular from the New Zealand Union, which recommended it for consideration. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. G. Orrell, that the letter should be read at the dinner to be held shortly for the coaches of the various Auckland club teams. A letter was received from members of the Junior .Management Board on the subject of the instruction given by the management committee that an additional match should be' played in order to finalise the third grade competition. A deputaton on the same subject attended from the Technical Old Boys Club. Both the letter and the representations of the deputation were taken in committee. Subsequently it was decided that the junior management board's letter should be received; that,-as neither team wished to play again, the . Grammar and Technical teams be bracketed for the third grade championship; and that the Junior Management Board be invited to meet the management comraittee for a general discussion next day.The Manukau senior reserve grade team was granted permission to travel to Thames next Saturday. It was decided that a letter should be sent to Mr- J- G. C. Wales, congratulating him upon his refereeine last Saturday in the match between Auckland and the Barbarians, and thanking him for his services to the game.
