NEW NATIVE SCHOOL

WHAKAREWAREWA BLOCK GRANT APPROVED BY CABINET [«Y TELKCTIAnr OWN" CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday Negotiations which have extended over a period of about two years were finalised last night, when Mr. A. F. Moncur, M.P., was advised by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, that Cabinet had approved of a grant for the erection of a new native school at Whakarewarewa. The present site of the school is on the main road near Whakarewarewa and alongside the property of the Rotorua Golf Club. Considerable controversy has taken place as to whether the new school should bo erected on .the same spot or on another location. Several alternative sites have been suggested for the consideration of the Minister and those directly concerned during the past two years. For some time a position of stalemate existed owing to objections to the proposed sites by interested parties. All of the proposed sites were inspected by the Minister and ultimately he selected a site in the State Forestry plantation area at the eastern side of the municipal aerodrome. It is understood that the Minister is anxious to make the school a model one in keeping with Rotorua. as a tourist spa. and also as a native school to make it conform with true Maori architectural design as a tourist attraction for the district.
