ERNDALE SURPRISES IN SPRINT

An overcast sky was not propitious for the opening of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday, but the day remained fine and patrons enjoyed an excellent day's racing, with several keen finishes. Seldom do fortunes change in a race as rapidly as they did in the concluding stage of the Avondale Cup, which was most exciting. Within a short space, half a dozen runners in turn looked to hold winning chances and the effort of Tidewaiter, who was P bought cheaply from his former Auckland owners, was pleasing. The largest dividends of the day were returned by the winner of the Avondale Stakes, Anopheles, who also scored the easiest success, and by Erndale, who defeated the open sprinters in the Flying Handicap.
