CORNWALL PARK
Sir, —In Manukau Road we have a statue and park leading to a beautiful drive, which runs to the top of One Tree Hill, where there is the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell. He gave all this land to the people of New Zealand and it stands in his memory. In the drive through One Tree Hill we have the homes he lived in which, too, stand as a memorial to him. Now a monument, costing £15,000, is going to be erected on One Tree Hill, a tremendous amount. Until quite recently the grass in the park was several feet high and even now in this park and through the drive the grass is not kept as a lawn, as it once was.
Would not Sir John Logan Campbell rather have had the ground he gave kept in good order than a monument costing so much money? I believe the gardens were neglected because of the increase in land tax, but I saw in the Herald the other day, a bill was introduced into Parliament to try and get Cornwall Park exempt from the tax. Maybe if this is granted the park will be 'kept as it was a few years ago. Even so, I think £15.000 is too large a sum to spend on a monument. Why not £SOOO for the monument and the other £IO,OOO for some needy cause? J.V.C.
