-VESSELS' MOVEMENTS RETURN FROM ISLANDS ILEITII AND WELLINGTON PLANS FOR CRUISERS
Aftor Having been away from Auckland for over four months, during which ■time.they, have visited Sydney and have made their annual patrol cruises of South Pacific Islands, the two Imperial •escort vessels Leith and Wellington are .'expected to return to the Devonport Kaval Base early next month. The •cruiser Leander will also he back in jiort within the next fortnight after making a cruise to southern ports of i\ew Zealand. The other large sea-going vessel of the squadron, the Achilles, ■will leave Auckland on September 17 for ■'l/yttelton and other ports in the south.
The cruises of the Leith and Wellington liavo been among tho longest undertaken by ships on the New Zealand station. They left Auckland in •company oil April 27 for Sydney, where they stayed until Juno 13. While there tlicy wero fitted with certain delicate instruments expected to be of particular Value for their work in the islands. Dates of Arrival Leaving Sydney they parted company for individual voyages to British island upon which they have since been engaged. The Leith, under thecom- ' mand of Captain L. C. P. Tudway, is 'due back on September 10, and she will be preceded by a few days by the Wellington, under the command of Com''imander G. X. Loriston-Clarke, which 'will return on September 7. On September 7 the Leander, commanded by Captain J. W. IxivottCarnac, is expected from Picton, the .last port of call on a cruise which began toward the beginning of this month. The visit was made after her proposed voyage to islands administered by New •Zealand with the Governor-General, Viscount Gahvay, had been postponed until next year, following an outbreak
•of measles and bronchial catarrh on •'Bomo of the island*. '
Visits to England
The southern cruise of the Achilles will be her last before she leaves, under the command of the commodore of the sea-going squadron, Commodore I. G. Glennie, for rccommissioning in England. Slro is expected to return to New Zt&land toward the middle of next year, probably with a new commodore, as Commodore GJennie's term will expiro while the ship is in England. It is probable that > the practice of recommissioning the Achilles in England will be followed in the case of r _the Leander. If this is so the second ! cruiser will probably leave Auckland for ';Great Britain in 1940.
