FRIENDSHIP PACT
JAPAN AND BRITAIN NEGOTIATIONS SUGGESTED LONDON, July 27 The diplomatic correspondent of the Australian Associated Press learns that the British Government has intimated to Tokio its readiness to begin conversations for a pact of friendship similar to that between Britain and Italy for the improvement of relations. It is gathered that Britain stipulated that negotiations would be conditional on a "friendly gesture'' from Japan in the form of payment for damage done 1o British property by the SinoJapanese conflict. British property in Shanghai alone amounts to £80,000,000. Japan is not expected to pay immediately. but to make a "token payment" as proof of good faith. ]f negotiations occur it "ill bo the most far-reaching attempt for many vcars to put relations between Britain and Japan on a friendly basis, safeguarding the Empire's trade and territorial interests in China and the l'ar East.
