SOUTH AFRICANS DEFEATED GAME GOES TO 71ST HOLE ' LONDON. July 28 Tho Empire challenge golf match for .CoOO resulted in a win for tho British pair, T. H. Cotton and R. A. "\Y hitcorn be, who defeated the challengers. A. D. Locke and S. Brews, of South Africa, bv 2 and 1. Played over 72 holes at Walton Heath, the match was a very even contest and Locko and Brews led at the end of the first 30 holes 2 up. The South African professionals issued a challenge two months ago and it was left to Cotton to select his own partner. Cotton chose \\. A. \\ hitcombe, the British open champion, and on form a win for the British pair was not unexpected. Cotton finisher third in that event hut. neither Locko nor his partner figured prominently. In the Empire challenge match tho South African pair did extreme y wel to take the game to the , Ist hole and the fact that tl.cy held the advantage at the end of the first .ay s play indicates that there was little d.flerencc between the players.
