CASTING VOTE
CENTENNIAL CONTRIBUTION ' v. . DIVISION ON COUNCIL X The casting vote of the Mayor was required at the Manurewa Borough Council meeting on : Monday night to authorise a contribution to the Auckland Provincial Committee of the Centennial Exhibition. The committee's -letter stated . that the. borough's contribution has bcert assessed at £lO 10s for this' and next, year. , 1 Opposition to contribution was expressed by Mr. D. W. McNaughton. He felt -that, the council should conserve its funds to meet its present and avoid incurring others. slr. 'L. 1. Avling suggested that the 'Council should not adopt a "dog in the -'manger" attitude. Only one or two ilocal bodies/ ho understood, had refused to contribute', and he would dis,like seeing Manurewa doing likewise. . The Mavor, Mr. W, J. Ferguson, said .-'that-many local bodies contributed to ijess worthy objects. The exhibition was a special occasion and Auckland should take its right place in it. His motion that thp council accept the assessment /"resulted in four votes being cast for •and against, and the Mayor exercised •his casting vote to carry the resolution.
