TEAL ALMOST EXTINCT
DESTRUCTION IN WAIKATO DOGS AND WEKAS BLAMED [bt TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] TAUMARUNUI, Monday Chiefly due to the destruction of nests and eggs by dogs and wekas, the brown teal, a popular bird a few years ago, is now almost extinct in the Waikato, according to a report presented at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society at Taumarunui. The council decided to place aside a sum of money for the reintroduction of these birds. It is the intention of the society to establish Virginian quail in suitable areas throughout its district when suitable transport is available from overseas. It was decided to liberate 4000 pheasants this season. The game committee will inspect suitable areas at Thames and Waihi for liberation of birds next February.
