BOGUS RAFFLE RUN
FALSE PRETENCES CASE TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT [BY TF.LEGKAPH —OAVN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Saturday Tho soliciting of money from residents of Hataitai last week on behalf of a supposed hospital patient was described in tho Magistrate's Court when Henry Lorraine Scott, a labourer, pleaded guilty before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., to a charge of obtaining 10s from Charles Burbcry and others by moans of false pretences. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour. Sub-Inspector J. A. Dempsey said that Scott visited Hataitai on June 9, with his hand bandaged, and produced to various people a notebook, containing numbers in a raffle, together with the names o£ Hataitai residents. Ho represented that ho had been a patient m the Wellington Hospital and was running a raffle to raise funds a wheel-chair for another patient. The prize was a duchess set, and the laflle would he drawn that night and the result published. Unfortunately for him ho was recognised at one place as the man with a bandaged hand' who had run a similar swindle in Christ-church. To a constable who was called, Scott said his name was Henry Luqus and that he was running a raffle for a patient in ward 7\ continued tho s"binspector. At the hospital ward 7 could not bo found. Scott Inter said he intended to use the money to pay his board at tho hospital. When the bandage was removed tho hand was found to be uninjured. Accused said a chemist in Lambton Quay had healed it, but could not point out the shop. Ho had been before the Court 011 various charges since 1917, and , in-1927 sentenced to a year's, imprisonment on a charge of being a rogue "and vaga,bond.
