GALVANISED WIRE
STANDARDS FIXED EFFECTIVE FROM OCTOBER 1 Standards for galvanised zinctoated steel fencing wire have now been defined by the Now Zealand Standards Institute of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and have been issued to the Auckland Hardware Association. While there have been tentative standards, the specifications now issued become hnal from October 1 next. The specifications cover two Rraclcs of wire in gauges 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 in ordinary steel wire, and 12i and 14 gauged in high tensile Hteel wire. They lay down requirements for pliability and tensile or breaking strength, and provide for two qualities of galvanised fencing wire, namely, type "A" (first-class galvanising) and typo "B" (second-class galvanising), the difference between the two types being that, of the comparative thickness of the galvanised coating, which is heavier in type "A" than in type "B." ' Under the standardised system farmers and other users will have the advantage of knowing, for instance, the weight of the zinc coating on the wire they purchase, which will determine its resistance to corrosion, and therefore the effective life of the fence in which it is used. From the aspect of manufacturers and distributors, they will eniov the advantage of an equitable competitive basis. Type "A" is recommended to farmers in districts where there is a heavy rainfall and j ocean moisture.
