THE WAIHI SWAMP
DRAINAGE PROBLEMS DISCUSSION AT PONGAKAWA [by* telegraph—owx correspondent] TE PUKE, Saturday The drainage problem's of tho Waihi swamp were discussed with Mr. C. H. Burnett, M.P., by a representative meeting of ratepayers at Pongakawa. "I know what the settlers are up against," stated Mr. Burnett. The drainage of such an area as the Waihi. swamp can be tackled only by the Government if permanent results are to be obtained. If there was a reasonable chance of success tho Government would not shirk its duty, said Mr. Burnett. There was no reason why the Waihi swamp ratepayers should not receive the samo considerations as the farmers on the Eangitaiki. A motion requesting the Government to examine the present drainage system, its application to individual ratepayers, and the maintenance and interest rates, was proposed by Mr. J. B. Cawto and carried unanimously. A committee consisting of Messrs. G. H. Mends, J. B. Cawte, T. Carter, J. Ball, D. Wickham and H. Wilkins was set up to confer with Mr. Burnett on the drainage problem.
