SHIP BUMPS ON BAR

THE STEAMER POOLTA NO APPARENT DAMAGE INCIDENT AT GREYMOUTH [by TELEGRAPH —OWN' correspondent]

GREYMOUTH, Friday Due .to a heavy swell the steamer Poolta, which left the Greymouth wharf at 8.35 o'clock this morning for Wellington, bumped the outer bar in negotiating tho harbour entrance. However, she was not stopped, and as far as can be ascertained no damage was caused. When the incident occurred the vessel gave the customary signalling whistle and ran up a flag signal. Owing to the direction of the wind the flags were not recognisable from the signal station and this caused a lengthy delay, the ship not leaving the roadstead until about 10.30 a.m., after a dredge had approached her and road tho signal for the benefit of the port authorities. The Poolta, in the command of Captain T. Bcvan, was fully loaded with approximately 300,000 ft. of timber and 1300 to.ns of coal for Miramar and Wellington, and was drawing 17ft. 6in., the depth of the bar being a little over 25ft., discounting the considerable swell.
