RIMUTAKA RAILWAY
DEVIATION PROPOSAL HINT FROM MR. SEMPLE STATEMENT TO BE MADE SOON [by telegbaph OWN correspondent] MASTERTON. Thursday A subject of great importance to the Wairarapa, the proposed deviation of the Rimutaka railway, was hinted at by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, speaking at a reception given him by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, on the occasion of the Minister's first official visit to Masterton.
Describing the Rimutakas as the mountains dividing TV airarapa from Wellington, Mr. Semple said the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, would make a public pronouncement on the question when he visited Masterton in a few days, and would tell them what the Government was going to do. He would not say anything himself, but would leave it to the Prime Minister. "When you hear what Mr. Savage has to tell you I am inclined to think you will say 'Halleluja,' " the Minister declared.
