NEW. COUNCIL MEMBER CHOICE OF GRADUATES MR. DOUGLAS ROBB ELECTED By a margin of 72 votes Mr. Douglas Robb, consulting surgeon, of Symorids Street, was elected yesterday to fill,the vacancy on the council of the Auckland University College caused by the death of the late president, Mr. H, J. D. Mahon, as representative of the Court of Convocation of the Auckland university district. The only other candidate was Professor It. M. Algie, and in a poll of 1176 votes Mr. Robb obtained 610 to Professor Algie's 538, the remaining 28 votes being informal. The first count was completed yesterday afternoon and a final count will be made to-day.
The successful candidate was nominated by a group of graduates who at the time of the nomination pointed out that scientific and " medical interests needed more direct representation on the council. .
Mr. Robb, who is the son of the late Mr. John Robb, formerly gerieral manager of the Kauri Timber Company in Auckland, was educated .at Mount Eden School ■ and Auckland Boys' Grammar School, where he won a University Junior Scholarship. For some time he was a student of Auckland University College and later entered Otago University, where he qualified M.B. in 1922. After five years' postgraduate work in London, Mr.. Robb graduated M.D. in 1928. While in England he received hi* fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, and in 1929 was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. During the last 10 year* Mr. Robb has practised as a consult, ing surgeon in Auckland. " ; '
