OIL-SOAKED PENGUINS
SUCCESSFUL CLEANING BOTH RETURN TO. OPEN SEA [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The two Great Crested Penguins which were found covered with oil and underwent cleaning operations at the Canterbury Museum on Tuesday, were released at Taylor's Mistake yesterday. The curator of the myseum, Mr. R. A. Falla, said that the birds, which had suffered from loss of natural oil when being washed in petrol, had preened themselves thoroughly and returned to their normal condition.
They were alert and active, and, after remaining on tlio rocks for a short time, where they engaged in a few squabbles, took to tlio water and headed for the open sea, added Mr. Falla. There was a heavy swell, but the penguins seemed to be quite at home once more and dived under each roller as it approached them. They appeared to be suffering no discomfort. Mr. Falla secured films of the birds as they left the shore.
