BERTHING DIFFICULTY

FLOOD TIDE IN PORT AWATEA'S experience An unusually strong flood tide made tho berthing of the traristasman liner Awatea at Queen's Wharf a difficult task when the vessel arrived from Sydney yesterday morning. Although strong south-easterly winds were experienced during the voyage, the ship rounded North Head according to the scheduled time, but, even with the assistance. of a tug, about an hour elapsed before she was alongside the wharf. The worst difficulty was experienced off the end of Queen's Wharf, where, according to the commander, Captain A. H. Davey, the tide was like a mill race. Pushing on the port side, the Auckland Harbour Board's tug William C. Daldv could scarcely hold the bow of the liner against the rip, but finally the ship was brought parallel with the end of the wharf. From here a heavy line was run out to the side of the wharf, and, with assistance from the tug, she was pulled around into position.
