'J his morning on the outside of the course proper, Hnnlon was assisted at different stages over a mile by Octane and Darien, and ran the last seven furlongs in 1.38 3-5. Araboa, who is shaping well, ran half a mile in 56 4-5s without being extended. Lumicre was ridden out to beat Palastyle over live furlongs in 1.10. Pink Robe, who is light in condition, beat lllora over six furlongs in 1.25 1-5. Spanish Lad sprinted half a mile in 54 2-ss. He acts well in soft going. Slayer was going better than Cone Peak to record 555. Norseman travelled seven furlongs in 1.42 in a useful working gallop. Roseman and Janet Gavnor covered the same ground in 1.41, the last six in 1.20. High Glee cantered part of a circuit and finished a mile in 1.53 2-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.25 2-5. Gay Vixen went seven furlongs, the last six in 1.26 2-5. Valarth shaped well over two hurdles and Mclleath pleased more than Delrain over three flights. The facilities for schooling hurdlers at Wingatui are open to improvement. There are two ilights in the back stretch and another in the straight. There is a long gap between the second and third hurdles. One or two more flights could be added with advantage and would assist in the education of novice hurdlers. Radius Rod, Amy Johnson and Pallaform were schooled over the steeplechase course yesterday afternoon. Amy Johnson blundered at the water jump, but the others gave a satisfactory display. Surge was schooled over hurdles and Salt Spray and Vantoon over the fences, each of them shaping in a workmanlike manner. RICCARTON HORSES SOUTHERN CANDIDATES MUNGATOON RETAINS FORM [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CimiSTCHURCH, Tuesday The outside of the course proper was open at Riccarton to-day for fast work; but most of those to race at Wingatui will be given their final work to-morrow morning. Greek Gold was of no use to Finaneiere in a six-furlong task, taking 1.17 3-5. The former is to go to Dunedin, but his prospects do not appear hopeful. Mungatoon and The Wrecker were companions over a mile run in 1.41 2-5, the first half in 50 2-ss. The former was doing the better and should earn further distinction at Wingatui. Clubman and Alby took 1.6 for five furlongs, but ran the last four in 50 4-ss, finishing abreast. Linguist was kept in restraint to cover seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5. Second Innings and Lord Hawke, both by Winning Hit from Lady Clarenccux, were at Riccarton to-day in the charge of the North Canterbury trainer E. Redmond, who will have the pair racing at Dunedin. Second Innings had a recent success at Blenheim, and has shown himself to be useful, but he has not yet encountered company as strong as that at Wingatui. Lord Hawke is a promising four-year-okl and will bo making his first public appearance at Wingatui. ■ ■ Tlie jockey M. Caddy will complote his apprenticeship with A. S. Ellis, the Riccarton trainer, late in August, but ho intends to sign on for another term before launching out as a free-lance. His younger brother, Ronald, is also apprenticed to Ellis and has been granted a riding.licence for apprentice races only. He may have his first ride in the Silverstream Handicap, for apprentice riders, on the second day of the Dunedin meeting. GOOD GOING FOR DERBY WELCOME RAIN IN ENGLAND LONDON. May 30 Week-end rain has broken the drought, and good going is now assured at Epsom for the Derby. Previously it was feared that the hard state of the track would mean the withdrawal of some horses. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Taxation from the Manawatu Racing Club's Winter Meeting amounted to £1507 151s, compared with £1523 9s lid last year. In his third attempt over country Red Sun outclassed the opposition in the Whirokino Steeplechase on Saturday. As a good winner on the flat and a genuine stayer, he should win a valuable jumping prize this winter if he fences over sturdier obstacles as well as he did at Foxton. Mr. W. Higgins, whoso representative Debhain won the Kebbell Memorial Handicap at Foxton, is due to arrive in England this week. His trainer, H. Telford, heard the news of this gener-ally-unexpected win in hospital. Debbam won so very easily that he is likely to be well supported at his next appearance, whatever the company opposed to him. ' If Red Sun was up to three stone better than any of his field at Foxton. Beau Gallante was similarly superior among the hurdlers. The firm going was in his favour and be was always Eomti well to win in a canter, it was Beau Gallante's first win since he took both hack hurdle races at the Wangaiuu summer mooting in January of last year. The most comfortable of several easy wine at the Foxton meeting was that of Sporting Gift in the Hiinitangi Handicap. On a trip from Gisborne last season ho won a maiden race at Pahiatua in the colours of Mrs. T. J. Osmond. After the meeting J. Manuel, the Palmerston North trainer, took him on lease and this was his first success with Sporting Gift, although ho, had secured a second at Awapuni the precious week. Winner of the Foxton Cup at his first appearance in open company, Galteemoro had run into places _ five times since his previous success in a ninefurlong hack race at Awapuni in March He was therefore due for another win. Bred by Mr. J. Porter, he was secured by his present owner, Mr. J. O'Brien, for 45 guineas and with Saturday's win he is out of hack ranks. The sire of Galteemoro is Martarma, and his dam. Lady Colossus, traces' to Lady Mersey, n sister to Carbine. TROTTING FIXTURES Juno 4, 6—Wanganui Trotting Club June 4, B—Auckland8 —Auckland Trotting Club. June 6 —Ashburton Trotting Club.
