BOXING RING

AMATEUR CONTESTS PROFESSIONALS IN TRAINING The first of a series of amateur nights to be presented to the boxing public in the suburbs this season will be held at North Shore this evening. It is intended to organise regular programmes throughout the suburban areas, and many of the best local amateurs will be featured in bouts. Cyril Pluto and Snowy Clarke, who will meet Vic Caltaux and Neville Mudgway respectively, at the Town Hall on Tuesday night next, will be seen in training exhibitions at the North Shore carnival. Auckland gymnasiums are full of activity at present. Champions and aspiring champions, under the care of their trainers, are gradually getting themselves ready for the amateur championships, which take place in August. As usual, the overseas and local professionals are helping the amateurs, due to the Auckland Association's progressive policy of importing overseas fighters and staging regular professional and amateur contests. The Auckland Boxing Association has arranged a fine double programme at the Town Hall next Tuesday night. Kither match, Clarke v. Mudgway, or Caltaux v. Pluto, would be considered a great attraction,' but owing to the public interest in the sport, the association is doing its utmost to cater for all enthusiasts. It is difficult to anticipate which contest will prove the most entertaining. Caltaux, unorthodox and a hard puncher, with his professional career satisfactorily commenced with two straight wins, will meet a clever boxer, and Pluto, anxious to prove his real worth, will be right out to win. The match between Clarke and Mudgway should be fast and entertaining. Clarke's first performance stamped him as a fast-moving fighter, but in Mudgway lie will meet a hardened, heavypunching boxer, who has never been put 011 the canvas. Clarke's hitting ability will be matched by Mudgway's punch, and Aueldanders will remember how Mudgway knocked-out Jack McMahon and Young Delaney at the Auckland Town Hall.

Dommy Gannon, Filipino featherweight, will meet Billy Hamilton, lightweight champion of Victoria, at Christchurch on Saturday night. Ganzon boxes under the control of the Wellingtion Association on June 9. His opponent in this instance will be Henry Dunn.

It is hoped that a match between Clarke and Ganzon will be staged in Auckland. This would undoubtedly prove a great attraction.
