BACKBLOCKS TRAGEDY
MAORI WOMAN FOUND SHOT LONELY BUSH SETTLEMENT ARDUOUS WORK FOR POLICE [by TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Thursday The Whakatane police were called last evening to the lonely TJrewera bush settlement of Matahi, after the discovery of. the death of a young Maori, Mrs. Waimatau Onekawa, aged 17, who was found lying in her whare with a gunshot wound in the body. There was a discharged shotgun beside her. The whare is situated across the Waimana River.
The police investigations were carried out under difficulties. It was dark when Coustables T. Cummings and Fuller arrived at the pa, and they had to procure horses to cross the river. The body was brought back to the pa 011 an improvised stretcher carried by men who waded chest deep through the river. Inquiries were continued on the spot until a late hour last night. An inquest will be held at Whakatane this morning. Matahi was the settlement established by the Maori "prophet," Rua, who died there. It is approached from Waimana by a rough track.
