BLIND INSTITUTE

FANCY DRESS BALL MANY STRIKING COSTUMES HAPPY time; for residents The lighthearted enjoyment with which the residents of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind entered into the spirit of carnival prevailing at their fancy dross ball last evening, was a pleasing featuro of the function, which was arranged by the Social Club for the Blind. The large gymnasium hall in which the dance took place was charmingly re-arranged, and made an appropriate setting for the many beautiful and original costumes worn by the guests.

The music was supplied by members of the institute band, the programme including a spectacular balloon dance, in which gaily coloured balloons were attached to the wrists of tho dancers.

Tho dance began with tho grand march, and tho difficult task of judging the costumes was undertaken by Mr. and Mrs. S. Donaldson, who awarded the prizes as follows: —Best dressed couple, Miss K. Rama and Mr. F. Robinson, representing a Spanish lady and Sir Francis Drake; most original costume, Mrs. R. Pengally, "Pod of Peas", and Mr. J. McGuire, Chinese mandarin; most humorous costume, Miss R. Edser, as Rip van Winkle, and Miss E. Beale, representing Avondale Races. Those present included: —Mr. J. E. Broadfoot, acting-director of tho institute; Miss C. Swanston, the matron, Miss E. Fitzgerald, matron of Bledisloe House, Miss C. Marks, assistant matron.

Among those present in fancy dress were:—Mrs. Beaton, representing a nurse; Mrs. C. Laurent, rainbow; Mrs. Pengally, "Pod of Peas"; Miss E. Smart and Miss J. Cramp, "Two Little Girls in Blue"; Miss J. Thompson, gipsy; Miss L. Jones, Chinese lady; Miss M. McLachlan, Swiss peasant; Miss V. Hawkes, Dutch Girl; Miss Kittelty, "Eat More Fruit"; Miss D. Beale, "Bathroom"; Miss L. Doughty, Hungarian girl; Miss K. Rama, Spanish lady; Miss J. Neil, Welsh girl; Miss L. McCarthy, country bumpkin; Miss R. Edser, Rip van Winkle; Miss A. Harland, "Naughty Marietta"- Miss E. Hawkins, sports girl; Mr. J. McGuire, Chinese mandarin; Mr. H. Beaten. naval officer; Mr. R. Mathieson, Sir Walter Raleigh; Mr. F. Robinson, Sir Francis Drake; Mr. D. Gwynne, nigger minstrel; Mr. C. Laurent, a brand of whisky; Mr. J. de Nave, Napoleon. The committee of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind Social Club comprised:—Messrs. J. D. McGuire (president), D. R. Mathieson, L. J. Voice, F. E. Robinson, R. E. Johnston, C. Laurent, R. Martin, R. Browne, J. Shortt, S. Pender, A. Komene, W. Martin and G. Pilgrim.
