AWAPUNI FIELDS

MANAWATU RACING CLUB LIST OF ACCEPTANCES SIX LEFT IN STEEPLECHASE PALMERSTON NORTH HANDICAP [by telegraph:—piiess association] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday Acceptances for the winter meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, to be held at Awapuni on Saturday, have been received as follows: —

OLD SURREY PLEASES - EREBUS BEATS GREAT HOPE HIGH PEER AND DAINTY SUE [by telegraph—own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday Erebus was impressive in shading Great Hope over six furlongs at Awapuni this morning when the semi-final gallops for the Manawatu Winter Meeting were staged. This trial took place on the plough, which was heavy. Old Surrey ran a solid seven furlongs on the course proper, where the flags were out 50 feet. On the course proper, prediction ran the last quarter in 27 2-ss, similar time being recorded by the Laughing Prince —Bellina filly. Strolling held the Lackham—Loyal Maid mare and Pine Gold over three furlongs, the last two taking 28s. Gay Molly, who has freshened and looks well, ran three furlongs under a big weight soundly in 40s. Bluffer Back to her Best

Bluffer, who. is back to lier best, ran half a mile in 52 2-ss, tho first two furlongs in 275. Selkirk, from the five furlongs, gave Sporting Gift and Aoro Lad about three lengths' start, but the two-year-old, who is to race at Foxton, made up his ground and after cutting out the first three furlongs in 39 2-ss, he came along nicely at the finish,- just beating Sporting Gift in 1.6 4-5. It was a good gallop. Merryman and Quadroon ran five furlongs attractively in 1.7, the last two in 275, Quadroon pulling up sound. High Peer and Dainty Sue finished on terms, taking 1.5 1-5, while Noisy Night required 1.8. Warehi, who looks none the worse for his hard races at Wanganui, covered six furlongs in good style in 1.23. Old Surrey, who is in great heart for the Mcßae Handicap on Saturday, ran his seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5, the first five occupying 1.8 4-5. He appeared to have something in hand. Conveyer, under restraint, took 1.43 for a similar task.

There was little between Merry Thought, Whistle Pinkie and Royal Limond at the end of a mile in 1.53 2-5, the first five furlongs 'in 1.10 2-5. Whistle Pinkie had the worst of the weights. Skyfull and Hirangi took 1.54 for their mile; Taumau and Power Chief recorded 1 .55. , Improved by Racing Erebus and Great Hope, after taking 14 2-5s for the initial furlong on the plough, hit out well to run the first three in 39 3-ss, and they came home full of running in 1.20. Both horses are improved by racing at Wanganui, and Erebus, who had his trainer, L. G. Morris, in the saddle, always appeared to have the ineasuro of his companion. Porotiti, looking a picture, ran six furlongs easily in 1.23, while Clarion Call, who continues to improve in appearance and will be in great heart for the Te Rapa Steeplechase, went strongly over a mile and a-quarter. Entheos (McDowell) and Tangled (Parkes) were associated over four hurdles, running a good 14s to the furlong. They jumped well until the last hurdle, where Tangled over-reached. He cut a tendon badly' and as he was lame afterwards, his chances of racing this week are remote. Power Chief (McDonald) jumped three steeplechase fences in good style and shows no ill-effects from his fall over All Spirit at Wanganui. Forest Glow and Riotous, who are to rate at Te Rapa, did strong pace work. Riotous has lost much of the bloom he had before Easter, and Forest Glow looks the more likely to improve on the trip. BAY OF PLENTY RACES TAURANGA WINTER MEETING The Bay of Plenty Racing Club will hold its winter meeting at Tauranga on Juno 18. The programme, particulars of which are published elsewhere, provides for the distribution of £I4OO in stakes, with £250 each allotted to the Bay of Plenty Steeples and the Opotiki Handicap. Nominations will close on Friday, May 27. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB NOMINATIONS ON 1 FRIDAY Nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting at Epsom on June 4 and 8 and for the Great Northern Centenary Trotting Derby, 1939-40, close with the secretary, Mr. A.
